THE RIDER  (2017) – 104 mins

Directed by Chloé Zhao

After suffering a near fatal head injury, a young cowboy undertakes a search for new identity and what it means to be a man in the heartland of America.

Once a rising star of the rodeo circuit, young cowboy Brady is warned that his competition days are over after a tragic riding accident. Back home, Brady finds himself wondering what he has to live for when he can no longer do what gives him a sense of purpose: to ride and compete. In an attempt to regain control of his fate, Brady undertakes a search for new identity and tries to redefine his idea of what it means to be a man in the heartland of America.

The film is followed by an A&Q discussion with Wendy Ide (Film critic for The Observer, Screen International) and US actor Gale Harold (Deadwood, Desperate Housewives, Queer As Folk) and traumatic brain injury survivor. Hosted by the curators and agency-for-change Birds’ Eye View’s Mia Bays (producer of Oscar-winning and multi-BAFTA nominated films) and Jo Duncombe (BEV curator and creative producer Influencer Programme).
