TONI MORRISON: THE PIECES I AM

From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature.

Inspired to write because no one took a “little black girl” seriously, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula” and “Song of Solomon,” her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University.

Join Oscar-winning producer and Director-at-Large of Birds’ Eye View Mia Bays and special guests TBA who following the film, will be reading their favourite passages from Morrison’s famed writings.

Hi Niamh,

I hope you are well.  I am contacting you from Birds’ Eye View to see if Désirée Finnegan would be interested in becoming a mentor to one of our participants on our Future Leaders in Distribution  (FLD) programme?

FLD is supported by ScreenSkills using National Lottery funds awarded by the BFI as part of the Future Film Skills programme (with additional support from Endeavor Content, Eon Productions and Cornerstone Films). We have thirteen women with 7+ years distribution experience from: Studiocanal, BFI, Curzon, Dogwoof, eOne, Park Circus, Gower Street Analytics, Together Films – along with two freelancers – who we have been supporting over 6 months with workshops, networking, personal coaching, career support and mentoring.

Bianca Boey, Head of Publicity at Entertainment One, requested Désirée as her mentor. The mentoring entails 2 hours, minimum, which, given Bianca is based in London, could be via Skype, to fit in around Désirée’s schedule.

Guidelines attached give useful tips for mentors – and mentees – so that it is somewhat structured – the mentee is expected to be prepared so it’s focused and shaped to get the maximum benefit for both sides.

If Désirée has the time and is happy for me to introduce her to Bianca please let me know. Once we’ve done that, we will then leave it to them to work out a mutually beneficial date for their first meeting.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes
