Maggie Gyllenhaal stars as Lisa Spinelli, a kindergarten teacher and poet fed up with her career, her oblivious husband and teenage kids who largely ignore her. When she discovers that a five-year-old in her class may be a poetic prodigy, Lisa becomes fascinated and tries to protect him from neglectful parents. She soon finds herself risking her career and family to nurture his talent.

 

There will be a post screening PANEL DISCUSSION hosted by Birds’ Eye View’s director-at-large, Mia Bays, with Deborah Haywood, director of Pin Cushion, and Be Manzini, poet and filmmaker. Other speakers TBC.

 

As well as the panel discussion, there will also be live performances from poets Saju Ahmed and Enas Saeed, alongside Be Manzini.

Saju Ahmed is a spoken word poet and mentor who has performed nationally and internationally at brave new voices slam festival USA. He is a member of Leeds young authors and a resident poet at the Sunday practice and part of Leeds meets Miami International poetry exchange program.

Enas Saeed is a spoken word poet who performs locally and nationally she is part of manifesto in verse writing about women’s voices, she is also a member of Leeds young authors and the voice box café Central library and the new resident Poet at the Sunday practice open mic live arts event in Leeds.

Be Manzini is a Southern African raised in London, and her writing practice spans poetry, theatre and journalism. She has worked with the Theatre Royal Stratford East, Hoxton Hall, Tamasha and Immediate Theatre to name a few, her writing appears in numerous printed anthologies and online publications.
