SCREENWRITING FOR VIDEO GAMES

As video games grow in popularity, variety and mass culture, and as the consoles on which they are played become more powerful, game developers are looking for stronger, more gripping narratives and screenplays to compliment the more realistic artwork and greater depth to their worlds. The role of the screenwriter is no longer disputed on narrative game teams and thus a whole new medium has opened up for the screenwriter.
Film and Game Writer, Katie Ellwood, will take attendants through an introductory workshop that looks into some of the theories and pragmatics of writing narrative for video games. Aimed at writers who have greater knowledge of writing for film and tv than for games, the workshop will discuss what we have learnt from other media and apply it to narrative games. Focusing on the similarities, the important differences, we will build an understanding of the fundamentals of game design and an awareness of the game player.
Screenwriting for Video Games is a short practical course designed to unravel the "black art" of video games.
