THE UNPOLISHED
(Pia Marais, Germany 2007, 95’)

ICA CINEMA 2
Monday 10 March 8.45PM

Winner of the Tiger Award at the 2007 Rotterdam Film Festival and co-starring the brilliant Birol Unel (Head On, Transylvania), The Unpolished is an honest, uncompromising story based on some of the directors own experiences of growing up with ‘chaotic’ parents. When 14-year old Stevie moves with her parent to a small provincial town in Germany she tries to fit in, spreading stories to the locals that she’s the daughter of a diplomat – while her parents run amok and shirk all responsibilities. As friends and hangers-on fill her parents home, chaos mounts and Stevie is left with a stark choice about her own identity and direction in life.

Followed by director Q&A.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa Pia Marais is the daughter of a ‘lunatic’ Rada trained actor. Having studied art at Chelsea School of Art (London), The Rietveld Akademie (Amsterdam) and KunstAkademie (Düsseldorf), she went on to study film at the Deutsche Film- und Fernseh-Akademie (DFFB) in Berlin. The Unpolished is her first feature length film.
