SLEEPWALKING LAND + Director Q&A
(Teresa Prata, Mozambique/Portugal 2006, 103’)

ICA CINEMA 1 Saturday 8 March 1PM
UK PREMIERE

"An emotionally affecting tale... A parable for a society struggling to copy with its evisceration." - Variety

Young Muidinga is a dreamer. His desperate pleas to find the family he lost while his country, Mozambique, was in civil war are stifled by seemingly hard-hearted guardian Tuahir. In a diary he finds beside a dead body, he reads the story of a woman on a ship who is searching for her son. Muidinga is convinced that he is her son and decides to find her. The road they travel along is enchanted: it knows their desires and moves them from one place to another, making sure they survive to reach the longed for sea. Sleepwalking land is a heart-rending and fantastical tale based on the book of the same name by Mia Couto.

Teresa Prata was born in Portugal and spent her childhood in Mozambique and adolescence in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Having received a degree in screenplay writing and directing in Berlin, she has made experimental videos and installations, as well as numerous shorts. This is her first feature film.
