SAKURAN
(Mika Ninagawa, Japan 2006, 111’)

ICA CINEMA 1
Saturday 8 March 8:30PM
UK PREMIERE

"Dripping with colour and very sexy" - Fiona Fletcher, Birds Eye View programmer

The Anti-Memoirs of a Geisha, Sakuran is a luscious visual treat from popular Japanese photographer Mika Ninagawa. Independent bad-girl courtesan Kiyoha (Anna Tsuchiya) lives from a young age in the pleasure quarter Yoshiwara. All the other girls want to redeem themselves and escape. But Kiyoha depends on no-one. If this is the life she is subject to, she’s going to be the best. Much to the envy of her peers, Kiyoha finally becomes the Oiran (considered the most prestigious and beautiful of all the courtesans) – but with her new status learns some lessons in love. With a wonderfully odd-ball score of Jazz, Electro and Japanese Pop and lavish costume to boot, Sakuran excels as a whole-hearted and stylistically original tale of one Geisha girl snarling, biting and kicking her way to the top.

Born in 1972, Ninagawa is one of Japan's most celebrated and acclaimed photographers. Her vivid and versatile conceptual style highly influenced her moving image debut Sakuran.

Read what BEV programmer Fiona Fletcher thinks:

Dripping with colour and very sexy, SAKURAN is entertaining and energetic. With a mismatch musical score that would make Sofia Coppolla swoon and some fab stylised montages, this is a contemporary reflection on an age old Japanese custom. Underdog Geisha-in-waiting Kiyoha is at first horrified by the threat of becoming anything like the female courtesans of Yoshiwara, but her attitute takes a shocking turn after peeking into the bedroom action of one of her superiors with a client.  A celebrated photographer, director Mika Ninagawa let's loose the reds and creates deep impression with her visual sensibility – but it's the unequivocal casting of the cool and sultry Anna Tsuchiya as Kiyoha that elevates SAKURAN -  she is one to watch.
