APPLES, DRINKING TEA + Director Q&A
(Zohreh Shayesteh, Iran/US 2008, 47’)
ICA CINEMA 2 Sunday 9 March 12.15PM UK PREMIERE
Two years ago Iranian-American Zohreh Shayesteh travelled to Abianeh, an ancient village in her homeland Iran. Returning to find the women in her photos she unexpectedly strikes up a friendship with Keshvar, a blunt and feisty old woman, who becomes her confidante and protagonist. What was to be a historical documentary about a village and its people ends up a personal journey for the filmmaker herself.
Zohreh Shayesteh was born and raised in Iran, she left before the 1978 revolution and now lives in New York City. She studied film production at New York University, and has worked as a TV producer and director. She has directed features and her documentary film Inside out was the official selection of 2006 Tribeca International Film Festival.

In a state
run asylum for the elderly and disabled in El Salvador, the daily
rhythms of life cycle along in this humorous yet tender film. While
the viewer is privy to a jumbled world of noisy TVs, little cups
of pills and sheet metal beds, this short documentary also captures
its subjects’ peaceful pastimes, from seaside trips to Latin dance.
With
a shared background in Swedish television, Nicander started off
at the Stockholm Film School, and Jonsson at Melbourne University.
Nicander now specialises in cinematography at the Polish National
Film School and Jonsson has since studied practical television,
sound and editing in Sweden. They have worked on a variety of short
film projects including Nicander’s ‘Orobus’ 2007 (Goteborg Film
Festival) and Jonsson’s ‘Singing for the king’ 2006.
