VIEW FROM A GRAIN OF SAND + Director Q&A
(Meena Nanji, US 2006, 82’)

ICA CINEMA 1
Monday 10 March 9PM

"Gripping. Nanji narrates this history with clarity and passion" - LA Weekly

"A remarkable treasure trove" - Variety

A compelling journey through the last 30 years of Afghanistan's history, as lived by three Afghan women. Shot over three years in Pakistan and Afghanistan, a doctor, teacher and social activist tell how their lives were violently affected by wars of international making, religious fundamentalism and three different regimes in Afghanistan. The women lead us through Afghanistan’s complex history, telling how global power plays have dramatically impacted their lives in devastating ways.

Born in Kenya, Meena Nanji moved to England when she was nine and Los Angeles when she was seventeen. She is best known for her experimental film work, which has been recognized by bodies including the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation Intercultural Film/Video Fellowship Award. Her work has won numerous awards and has screened at film/video festivals internationally as well as broadcast on PBS stations throughout the US and on European television.

Screening supported by ActionAid
