A visually stunning, poetic film studying earth, fire, water and air as seen by those who struggle against them every day. We are witness to firefighters at a "smokejumper" camp in Siberia, crab fishermen battling rolling waves in Alaska, miners deep underground in Germany and Russian cosmonauts preparing for launch into space. An accomplished and elegant debut from young Dutch filmmaker Jiska Rickels, 4 Elements weaves together gorgeous cinematography with an equally sublime soundtrack from her father, avant-garde composer Horst Rickels.
Dutch filmmaker Jiska Rickels makes her directorial debit with 4 Elements, which grew out of her hugely successful graduation project ‘Untertage’ (Days Under), a study of miners in Germany. 4 Elements was chosen to open the 19th IDFA and has enjoyed great success on the international festival circuit.
