THREE TIMES DIVORCED (Ibtisam Mara’ana, Israel 2007, 75’)
ICA CINEMA 2 Sunday 9 March 6.30PM UK PREMIERE
Winner: Best Israeli Documentary, DocAviv
Three Times Divorced tells the harrowing story of Khitam, a Gaza born Palestinian woman married to an Israeli Arab. When her abusive husband divorces her in the Sharia court in absentia, she is left with no rights to see her six children, no property, nowhere to live and no papers to legally remain in Israel. Her determination to see her children again and gain a permit to stay in Israel results in kidnaps, courtrooms and brick walls at every turn – even the women’s shelter will not take her in without valid papers. She continues to fight in the face of the unjust systems and bureaucracy which surround her.
