The Devil Came on Horseback follows the journey of former US Marine Captain Brian Steidle, who goes to Sudan as an unarmed military observer for the African Union. Used to carrying a gun, here he has only his still camera with which to document the atrocities he witnesses in Darfur. Eventually his frustration with the international community's inaction leads him to resign, and on his return to the US he releases his images to the New York Times, creating a media frenzy and completing his transformation from soldier to observer to human rights activist.
Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern are an award winning producer/director team working in film and television. Founders of Break Thru Films and co-directors of the award-winning 2006 documentary, The Trials of Darryl Hunt, their work is regularly screened both on the international festival circuit as well as HBO and PBS. They have been recognized with numerous awards including the Best Female Filmmakers Award - San Diego Film Festival, Adrienne Shelly Excellence in Filmmaking Award and Lena Sharpe/Women in Cinema Persistence of Vision Award - Seattle International Film Festival.
