CARAMEL ICA CINEMA 1 "A poignant portrait of women muddling through the uncertainties of a culture caught between the modern and the traditional." - Hollywood Reporter Official Lebanese submission: the 80th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. A delightful comedy following the lives of five women working in a Beirut beauty parlour. Between haircuts and caramel sugar-waxes we eavesdrop on intimate conversations about men, sex and motherhood. Director Nadine Labaki plays feisty Christian Layale, who is entangled in a hopeless relationship with a married man; her Muslim colleague Nisrine doesn't want her fiancé to know she's not a virgin; shy salon hair-washer Rima finds herself drawn to a female client; middle-aged regular Yamal wants to be an actress; and 65-year-old neighbour Rose has forgone marriage to care for her older sister. An incredibly touching and seductive first feature from one of Lebanon's leading actresses. Born in Lebanon in 1974, Nadine Labaki studied Media at Saint-Joseph University in Beirut. Her school film project was awarded in Paris in 1998. She went on to directing commercials and musical clips for well-known Middle-Eastern artists. In 2004, she attended the Résidence du Festival de Cannes to write Caramel, her first feature. TO BOOK TICKETS CALL ICA | |||||||
