ANTONIA

(Tata Amaral, Brazil 2006, 90’)

ICA CINEMA 1
Friday 7 March 9PM

"Bold Brazilian melodrama that moves to the rhythm of the streets" - The New York Times

Featured in the 2006 Toronto Film Festival, Antonia is a feel-good foray into the lives of four female musicians determined to make it big, despite their struggles living on the outskirts of São Paulo. Preta, Lena, Barbarah and Mayah are fed up with being backing singers and decide to follow their dream by forming their own hip-hop group . The girls get off to a promising start with the help of wily agent Marcelo but soon hit trouble when a rift almost tears them apart. To succeed they must overcome the daily trials of poverty, violence and revenge.

Tata Amaral (Sao Paulo, 1960) is one of the most awarded Brazilian filmmakers. Her first feature-length film, Um Céu de Estrelas (1997), was elected by critics as one of the three most important national films in the 90’s, and won 18 awards internationally.

Screening presented in partnership with Images Of Black Women
